President Emeritus of Emory University receives WMC Peace Award

Following on the joint initiative by IAMSCU, NASCUMC, and AUMTS, the World Methodist Council bestowed its World Methodist Peace Award to James Laney. Recipients of the Peace Award must have displayed Courage, Creativity, and Consistency towards peace and Laney was nominated due to his tireless work for peace in the Korean peninsula. His involvement in the region began during the Korean War, when he was working for military intelligence, and continued for over six decades as he worked as a missionary, pastor, and educator in Korea – including as faculty of Yonsei University. As he received the World Methodist Peace Award, Dr. Laney offered stated that “Korea has figured in my life ever since I turned 19. It has figured prominently and in the most profound ways.” He also encouraged the new generations to pursue peacemaking in various ways. Other recipients of the World Methodist Peace Award include Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Father Elias Chacour, Kofi Annan, Saidie Patterson, and Anwar Sadat – among many others.
